A weekend experience with my dad that changed how I see life and death. Complicated feelings. Sorrow and gratitude held together. Learning to live Heart-Strong.
This made me cry. Mad a first for taking the mother’s life; then understanding as I read on. I get it, but I’m still sad. It’s life…evolution. Thanks Jeremy
Jeremy, I have been enjoying your writing. Hunting has always been a big part of my family. I recently took a buck and gave honor for the life. I hunt for food to sustain the family and antlers have never been the goal. The meat provides a healthy alternative to some of the commercialized meats.
The time spent in my treestand also gives me time to reflect and meditate on life and its purpose.
Thank Chuck, and I love this! I think there are some people who view hunting as lesser than and even cruel. Now there certainly are some cruel hunters, but I would go out on a limb and say 99% are not. I have been primarily plant based for years. I have also eaten my fair share of meat over my life. I have come to believe that taking the life of another being for food to sustain your life, is an act of deep intimacy. And can be an act of love and connection. Something I want to experience as I believe it will bring me closer to my own humanity.
Thanks so much for the engagement and your support.
Jeremy dude - one post after another of powerful, insightful writing. Loving this.
Thanks so much Brennan! This was a fun one to write and at the same time sad. Holding two opposing emotions at the same time is pretty powerful.

Crying shows you humanity. I still think about her and cry on the inside. It is both from a place of gratitude and sorrow.

I appreciate your take on what you witnessed.
Thanks

This is a beautiful reflection on the life to death to life cycle — and the human moments of sharing this with your dad.
Thanks! I really enjoyed writing this one. Felt a little vulnerable sharing it, but that is what this adventure is all about.
